I remember being graded very strictly in Home Ec cooking class, but I liked the class. Sewing was tough for me- the 8th grade graduation dress project, especially. Mine was of yellow dotted swiss, and I had to redo parts of it again and again. How frustrating! I'm still impatient in some ways. Doris '56 |

I don't remember the yogurt or pretzels but do remember making pancakes in Mrs. Chappell's home ec class. The first sewing project was a yellow apron with a hand towel attached and that yellow thing to go around your head to be used in cooking class. Sewing a jumper on those old Singer sewing machines and then the 8th grade project was making a dress for graduation.....and having to wear it. Our year was a shift with cap sleeves, hem right at the knee. Mine was lime green and pink, it was 1967 after all. Kids from Henry and Houston were bussed in one time a week for home ec and shop. I had a heart touching talk with Allison Staib Boyle, where I heard that she actually spent time with Mrs. Chappell at the end of her life. I hope that Allison will write about this at some point. |
